GreenGround
"Feeling marginal, adolescents join gangs for social relationships that give them a sense of identity" (Vigil and Long, 1990).

Implementation of this GreenGround will provide recognition to indigenous culture through educational means, while inspiring alternative avenues for teens identity formation. The programs will offer culinary, regenerative gardening, and African musical instrument skill-building among kids, teens and their mothers
Take part in changing lives of indigenous communities
Address the trauma of colonialism
More than half of child population in South Africa is brought up by single mothers, and only 4% - by single fathers.

GreenGround is a community-rooted initiative in Vrygrond, Cape Town, transforming Butterfly Way Creche—a rare green space—into a regenerative micro-school and empowerment hub for

24 young children,
12 teenagers, and
20 single mothers
by August 2026.

With the support of Greenhouse NPO, we’re weaving together indigenous wisdom, ecological learning, food sovereignty, African music and enterprise development into a model of regenerative education that’s open-source and replicable.

Our goal: to restore land connection, communal care and rhythm in a place long affected by environmental injustice and historical erasure.

We are currently fundraising R652,000 (~$35,000 USD) to bring this vision to life for one full year.
Why GreenGround matters?
Address the trauma of colonialism

Vrygrond is one of Cape Town’s oldest and most underserved communities, with limited access to early childhood education, green space, or nutritious food.

Green Ground is a direct, place-based response to these needs—offering:

🪘 Indigenous-aligned rhythms: daily music, movement, earth craft, and storytelling

🌱 Food security: regenerative gardens, vertical growing, and food forest education

🍲 Teen mentorship: Fire Food Fridays—cooking, music, and foraging skills

💼 Mother-led enterprise: community kitchen, craft-making, and participation-based schooling

We don’t just educate. We grow food, build soil, raise children, and heal communities.
