New Moon Ecstatic Dance is a community arts and cultural-recognition project produced by Greenhouse, a Cape Town non-profit organisation. It combines ecological consciousness with movement and music.
The project is inspired by accounts of ancient Khoi transformation rituals in which communities gathered in nature in relationship with the cycles of the moon. Through rhythm, dance and community presence, humans for centuries co-created a connection with the Earth, the spirit world and one another. Some historical accounts describe gatherings continuing for 24 to 36 hours, allowing the community to enter states of trance, healing, renewal and belonging.
Greenhouse translates this principle into a contemporary community practice. At each gathering, people meet outdoors under the open sky and dance together through sunset and into the new-moon night. Our gatherings do not attempt to recreate or claim ownership of Khoi ceremony. Instead, they respectfully acknowledge the Indigenous understanding that movement can become not just entertainment: it can become a communal ritual of transformation and a way of restoring relationship with the living Earth.
Modern electronic music, ecstatic dance, live facilitation, contact improvisation, fire movement and ceremonial elements become part of our shared ecstatic journey through movement into a new moon month.
Held on Cape Town’s beaches and in other natural spaces, the events bring together conscious DJs, contact improvisation facilitators and fire artists. We dance barefoot, feel the ground beneath us and offer our movement as an expression of gratitude, love and recognition to the African lands, growing ecospirituality in our community.
The gatherings are alcohol-free, family-friendly and guided by principles of environmental responsibility, accessibility and respect for the land. Participants are asked to leave no waste and to care for the natural places that host us.
Several events in 2025 have also raised funds for Greenhouse community initiatives, including the creation of a clay studio supporting single mothers in Vrygrond township. In 2026, the clay studio “After the Fall” opened its doors for indigenous women from families facing significant social and economic challenges.
